	Bio


Ruth Aragón is a visual artist from Monterrey, Mexico, currently based in Phoenix, Arizona. She works with ceramics, textiles, video, and digital media to create imagined ecosystems and hybrid bodies that explore forms of protection, adaptation, and survival. Her practice stems from observing the natural world and how various species develop strategies to survive and coexist in hostile environments.

She studied Industrial Design (2015) and Art (2018) at the Universidad de Monterrey and is currently pursuing a Master of Fine Arts (MFA) at Arizona State University (2024–2027). Her work has been featured in the Arizona Biennial at the Tucson Museum of Art, the NCECA Juried Exhibition in Detroit, and Terraforma at the Tempe Center for the Arts, among other exhibitions in Mexico and the United States. She has held solo exhibitions in Monterrey and Chicago, including Con agua y sol me he criado (Heart Ego Gallery, 2024), A todo color (Comercio Popular, 2023), and Bajo el cielo despejado después de la lluvia (Castilla Klyuyeva Gallery, 2022). She has also participated in art fairs in Mexico and Spain. She received the 2026 Nathan Cummings Graduate Summer Travel Award for research, as well as grants from CONAHCYT and CONARTE, and was selected for the Jóvenes Creadores (Young Creators) program of the National System of Art Creators.

From 2019 to 2024, she co-founded Doble Trama, a textile design and art studio that collaborated with brands such as Adidas, Netflix, TikTok, and Adolfo Domínguez. Since 2023, she has also pursued a teaching career in art and textiles at Arizona State University and the Universidad de Monterrey, where she has developed and taught courses on textiles, pictorial research, color theory, and fabrication processes. 


Statement


My work creates imagined ecosystems and beings that propose other possibilities for protection for women in the face of gender-based violence, particularly forms of violence that threaten women’s safety, autonomy, and survival.

I work with ceramics, textiles, video, and digital media to construct hybrid bodies that combine fragments of the female body, mixed and tangled with forms of insects, snakes, flowers, or seeds, and blended with soil or stones. These beings feel familiar and recognizable, while at the same time appearing strange and difficult to identify. As narrative traces within ecological systems, these beings blur the boundaries between woman, organism, and landscape.

My work is informed by observing how different species survive, coexist, and adapt to hostile environments, developing protective strategies such as camouflage, mimicry, the production of toxins, defensive structures, and other physical transformations. I reinterpret these strategies and bring them into the body to consider new forms of defense, care, and collective survival.

I am particularly interested in the tension between attraction and danger: beauty can conceal toxicity, delicacy can become a form of defense, and what appears to be a threat can offer protection.

Me dijeron que no tragara semillas es un video experimental que continúa la investigación sobre los mecanismos de protección que desarrollan los cuerpos en la naturaleza. Para este proyecto, varias esculturas cerámicas de la serie Creciendo espinas fueron escaneadas para transformarlas en imágenes digitales que habitan el universo visual del video.


La pieza representa un momento central dentro de una ficción especulativa: la primera vez que una mujer ingiere una fruta capaz de hacerle crecer espinas. Este acto marca el inicio de una metamorfosis, el nacimiento de un cuerpo nuevo y protegido, un ser híbrido que responde a la violencia del entorno desarrollando defensas propias. De ahí surge el título, una advertencia común que aquí se convierte en gesto de resistencia.


El video está narrado a través de un poema. En su presentación en Arizona, Estados Unidos, fue leído por Delaney Gardner-Sweeney y aparece tanto en audio como en subtítulos en inglés. La primera lectura se escucha limpia y clara; posteriormente, el poema se distorsiona, integrándose al paisaje sonoro como ruido, respiración y ambiente, sugiriendo el desdoblamiento del cuerpo y su transformación.


Esta obra fue presentada en el MIX Center (ASU) en instalaciones de gran formato con superficies visuales extendidas en el piso, creando una experiencia inmersiva donde la mutación del cuerpo se hace palpable.

I Was Told Not to Swallow Seeds is an experimental video that continues the research on the protective mechanisms that bodies develop in nature. For this project, several ceramic sculptures from the series Growing thorns were scanned and transformed into digital images that inhabit the visual universe of the video.


The piece portrays a central moment in speculative fiction: the first time a woman eats a fruit that makes thorns grow from her body. This act marks the beginning of a metamorphosis, the birth of a new and protected body, a hybrid being that responds to the violence of its environment by developing its own defenses. The title comes from a common warning that here becomes a gesture of resistance.


The video is narrated through a poem. For its presentation in Arizona, United States, it was read by Delaney Gardner-Sweeney and appears both in audio and with English subtitles. The first reading is clean and clear, and later the poem becomes distorted, blending into the soundscape as noise, breath, and ambient textures, suggesting the body’s splitting and transformation.


This work was presented at the MIX Center (ASU) on large-scale screens with extended visual surfaces on the floor, creating an immersive experience where the mutation of the body becomes palpable.

	ES&#38;nbsp;El proyecto parte de una observación sencilla pero contundente: en la naturaleza, muchas especies generan espinas, toxinas, camuflajes o superficies hostiles para protegerse. A partir de esta premisa, la obra imagina cómo estos procesos podrían trasladarse al cuerpo de las mujeres y a sus formas de resistencia cotidiana.
&#38;nbsp;Las piezas funcionan como prótesis, extensiones o capas externas que aluden tanto a la vulnerabilidad como a la fuerza: superficies que crecen, mutan y se afilan en respuesta al entorno.En conjunto, el proyecto funciona como una metáfora del desgaste emocional y físico que implica habitar un cuerpo femenino en un mundo que exige estar alerta. Pero también es una afirmación imaginativa: la posibilidad de crecer nuestras propias garras, no para atacar, sino para existir con mayor seguridad y autonomía.

	
ENGrowing Thorns is a visual and speculative investigation into the defense mechanisms that bodies develop in response to violence, invasion, and constant threat. The project begins with a simple yet striking observation: in nature, many species produce thorns, toxins, camouflage, or hostile surfaces as protection. Building on this premise, the work imagines how these processes might manifest in women’s bodies and in their everyday forms of resistance.
Inspired by biological strategies such as datura flowers, burr-like seeds that cling to passing bodies, and the warning systems of certain amphibians, Growing Thorns proposes a hybrid gesture between feminist fiction and sculptural materiality. The pieces function as prosthetics, extensions, or outer layers that evoke both vulnerability and strength, surfaces that grow, mutate, and sharpen in response to their surroundings.
Taken together, the project becomes a metaphor for the emotional and physical wear involved in inhabiting a female body in a world that demands constant vigilance. But it is also an imaginative affirmation: the possibility of growing our own claws, not to attack, but to exist with greater safety and autonomy.

Con agua y sol me he criado es una serie de paisajes textiles que parte de la relación cotidiana con el paisaje en Monterrey: una ciudad rodeada de montañas que permanecen visibles, pero difícilmente accesibles dentro de una vida urbana marcada por el tráfico, la velocidad y la presencia constante de vidrio, acero y concreto. Sus composiciones retoman la estructura visual de ventanas arquitectónicas para construir paisajes inspirados en abstracciones de la flora del estado de Nuevo León.

La ciudad crece hacia arriba mientras la naturaleza resiste en los límites. Frente a los materiales y ritmos que han definido el crecimiento de Monterrey, la serie propone procesos que requieren tiempo, repetición y cuidado. Las piezas imaginan una ecología posible dentro de un paisaje urbano dominado por la prisa y la industrialización.

Con agua y sol me he criado is a series of textile landscapes that emerges from the everyday relationship with the landscape in Monterrey: a city surrounded by mountains that remain constantly visible yet difficult to access within an urban environment shaped by traffic, speed, and the constant presence of glass, steel, and concrete. Its compositions draw from the visual structure of architectural windows to construct landscapes inspired by abstractions of the flora of Nuevo León.

The city grows upward while nature persists at its edges. In contrast to the materials and rhythms that have defined Monterrey’s expansion, the series proposes processes that require time, repetition, and care. The works imagine a possible ecology within an urban landscape dominated by speed and industrialization.

Jardín: Tal para cual reúne una serie de obras que marcan el inicio de una investigación material y conceptual en torno a la construcción de relaciones. El proyecto toma la figura de la flor como punto de partida formal, como una estructura que permite pensar en vínculos, interdependencias y formas de crecimiento compartido.

Las piezas se construyen a partir de uniones, apoyos e intersecciones entre formas. Estas configuraciones funcionan como metáforas de las relaciones entre personas, donde cada elemento existe en relación con otro. La flor aparece así como un cuerpo que no se entiende de manera aislada, sino como parte de un sistema en el que sostenerse, equilibrarse y crecer implica coexistir.

El proyecto se desarrolla en dos momentos. Jardín corresponde al primer acercamiento a la cerámica, donde el énfasis está puesto en la exploración del material y en la complejidad creciente de las construcciones. A partir de estas primeras piezas, surge Tal para cual, una serie que integra el textil como un segundo material, ampliando las posibilidades formales y estructurales. En estas obras, la cerámica se relaciona con superficies textiles que funcionan como contenedores, marcos o espacios de soporte.

En conjunto, Jardín: Tal para cual plantea una reflexión sobre cómo los cuerpos y las formas se relacionan entre sí, cómo se sostienen y cómo se transforman en contacto con otros. El proyecto funciona como un punto de partida dentro de una práctica que más adelante continuará explorando la relación entre materialidad, cuerpo y entorno.

Garden: Tal para cual brings together a series of works that mark the beginning of a material and conceptual investigation into the construction of relationships. The project takes the figure of the flower as a formal point of departure, understood as a structure that allows for thinking about bonds, interdependence, and shared forms of growth.

The works are built through unions, supports, and intersections between forms. These configurations function as metaphors for relationships between people, where each element exists in relation to another. The flower thus appears as a body that cannot be understood in isolation, but rather as part of a system in which support, balance, and growth depend on coexistence.

Taken as a whole, Garden: Tal para cual reflects on how bodies and forms relate to one another, how they support each other, and how they transform through contact with others. Bajo el cielo despejado después de la lluvia es un proyecto en colaboración con Alejandro “Luperca” Morales, como Doble Trama.


Las piezas presentan una relectura de paisajes y vegetación, donde aparecen formas que remiten a arbustos, montañas y flores en movimiento. Más que representar la naturaleza de manera directa, las obras plantean un imaginario donde esta se reconfigura a través del color, la repetición y la simplificación formal.


El proyecto se originó a partir de un archivo de imágenes digitales de plantas utilizadas en el modelado para renders arquitectónicos. Estas imágenes fueron recortadas, editadas, clonadas y alteradas en color para producir nuevas formas. El proceso de abstracción digital sirvió como punto de partida para trasladar esos fragmentos a un lenguaje textil que transforma la frialdad del recurso digital en una materialidad táctil y manual.

La serie está realizada mediante tufting, una técnica textil en la que el hilo se inserta en una base para construir superficies con distintas densidades, alturas y texturas. Este lenguaje material permite generar composiciones que evocan elementos naturales de forma abstracta.

Under the clear sky after the rain is a project in collaboration with Alejandro “Luperca” Morales, as Doble Trama.

The pieces present a reinterpretation of landscapes and vegetation, featuring forms that suggest shrubs, mountains, and flowers in motion. Rather than depicting nature directly, the works propose an imaginary where it is reconfigured through color, repetition, and formal simplification.

The project originated from an archive of digital plant images used in architectural render modeling. These images were cut, edited, cloned, and color altered to generate new shapes. This process of digital abstraction served as the starting point for translating these fragments into a textile language that transforms the coldness of digital resources into a tactile, handmade materiality.

The series is produced through tufting, a textile technique in which yarn is inserted into a base fabric to build surfaces with varying densities, heights, and textures. This material approach allows for compositions that evoke natural elements in an abstract way.
